Prof. Joshua Tonies

a Visual Arts Professor at UC San Diego where he teaches courses in film, video art, animation, and studio arts.

exhibited his work most recently at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, The Center for Fiction in NYC, Comfort Station in Chicago Illinois, and the San Diego Museum of Art.

His primary focus is on drawing and the moving image, and his works center around temporary ecological studies that take form as animation, drawing, works on paper and book arts.

– Blender practicum: Creating a 3D Scene, workflow with objects, lighting, camera, materials + rendering

– Approaches to 3D modeling, sculpting tools, hard modeling, procedural modeling

– Developing iterative models, using references, managing meshes, and topology.

Students visit fabrication studios, and explore the professional context of 3D modeling and prototyping

– Introduction to photogrammetry, in-class exercise on creating photogrammetry using special tools

– Students begin to capture objects and explore photogrammetry individually.

– Students capture their subjects using a photogrammetry process, and refine/develop 3D models in Blender

Students visit location determined by the professor (on/near campus) and photograph sites /scan environments in order to create virtual scenes

– Develop game engine-ready assets, visualize their 3D models and explore real-time environments

– Exploring visualization of 3D objects in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

– Testing and refining assets for using debugging mode
