收到候補名單(Waitlist)通知時，孩子可能會感到非常失落，心情也一直懸掛著，夢想學校看似很近卻又很遠。

身為家長的你可能會有很多的問題，像是從候補名單上被正式錄取的機率有多高？有多少學生是在候補名單上？這些學生非常優秀嗎？與此同時，可以怎麼補救？

這篇文章將從大學招生官如何決定候補名單進行分析，提供挽救waitlist 名單的方法，讓你與孩子面對這個結果時，可以不那麼擔憂。

候補名單”Waitlisted”是什麼意思？

透過Regular Decision(RD)申請會有三個結果，分別是：錄取(Accepted), 沒錄取(Rejected)以及候補名單(Waitlist)。在候補名單上代表孩子的表現其實是有得到大學招生官的初步認可，但是還是沒有到大學招生官想要招收的標準。無論如何，在候補名單上，還是很有可以被大學招生官重新考慮的。

從候補名單上到被正式錄取的機率有多高？

在招生及篩選學生的階段前，大學端會事先決定好每年要招收的理想學生數量，但是大學端會招收比預定數量還多的學生，因為他們知道有些學生會選擇其他學校，放棄報到。

這代表著大學會在這些錄取名單中再進行評估計算，並推估出實際會報到的學生人數，當大學端高估了錄取學生的報到率，那麽名額即會釋出至候補名單中。

大學招生官如何在候補名單中做出選擇？

有一些大學會把候補名單的學生在進行分類，有一類是在候補名單中頂尖的學生，當有名額釋出時，這些學生就會被選上，但是這樣的情況是不常見的。

大部分的大學會再重新審查候補名單的人，且也會從這屆的學生特質中挑出他們所想要的人才。也就是說，假如今年缺少了音樂才華的人才，那麼擁有這樣的才華的學生就會比較容易被錄取，當然性別比例、種族比例等也會被納入考量內。

有什麼方法可以爭取或是提高正式錄取率嗎？

如果大學端有請孩子做出接受或是拒絕候補名單資格的決定，若孩子很想進此所學系，那麼建議要盡快做出決定。

接受了候補名單資格後，孩子必須著手去準備學校所需要的額外資料，像是推薦信、分數提交、新學期的成績等等。許多比較大的學校，像是紐約大學(NYU)，比較不會要求這麼多資料，因為他們學生的人數比較多，但也不妨試著寄信或打電話給大學，詢問他們需不需要遞交其他的額外資料。但是不需要去繳交大學沒有要求繳交的資料。

重新檢視自己的申請文件及作文

建議孩子重新檢視自己的申請文件，以及可以怎麼去彌補原先文件的不足。

很多被列為候補名單的學生，在申請文件上犯的錯誤是，他們沒有在文章中清楚地展現自己的個人特質，或是沒有一個令人印象深刻的故事，一個成功的個人故事除了需要展現個人鮮明的特質，學校也想看到孩子對學校未來的貢獻何在以及如何發展。

另一個被列在候補名單上的原因也有可能是孩子沒有充分的展現出自己的興趣，如果是在這樣的情況下，那麼就要去檢視活動清單列表上的活動。

而若孩子是因為學術表現沒有那麼優秀，而被學校列在備取名單上，那麼可以考慮遞交新學期的成績，所以12年級的成績也要好好保持，或是再重新考一次ACT/SAT 測驗。

Dear Admission’s Office:

I am exceedingly grateful to be waitlisted by my ultimate top choice for university, California Institute of Technology. The school spirit aligns with my entrepreneurial and engineering aspirations, and I am nonetheless still committed to Caltech. In light of this, I want to take this opportunity to update the admission committee on some of my accomplishments since applying.

This semester, I proposed and started a research project with the topic “Machine Learning in Assistive Technology” under the guidance of a variety of professors from National Taiwan University. The project is inspired by the knowledge I learned from Machine Learning Courses (Coursera by Stanford University) and Assistive Technology (MIT Beaver Works). It is currently ongoing and will be submitted for publishing in the following months. For reference, I was also  able to attach the report to this email.

In addition, I have continued to volunteer as a language tutor and have since picked up a paid job tutoring Physics. I was able to utilize some of the funds from tutoring to start a studying club at school. Upperclassmen are now able to share knowledge with students at a rented space close to our school on the weekends. It has been extremely rewarding and teachers have also shown their support for peer teaching by preparing additional materials! Lastly, I have begun shadowing professors to learn the aspects behind machine development. My experience shadowing these alumni professors has only further  reaffirmed my commitment to Mechanical Engineering at Caltech.

Overall, I believe that Caltech offers the perfect innovation-driven environment for me. The wide-array of opportunities will definitely contribute to further developing my technical skills and learning from the outstanding faculty, peers, and resources around me. Programs like TechReach speak out to me and I eagerly look forward to further exploring my passion for machine learning and their ethical deployment into the world. I am sure my cultural heritage, diverse interests, and passion for robotics would translate well into Caltech’s community.
